Taking an Inventory of Our Lives

ree

Recovery groups use inventory as a crucial part of the healing journey — a process of looking honestly at our past and present to uncover patterns, wounds, and areas that need change. But what we teach is that inventory isn’t just a step in a program — it’s a spiritual invitation. It’s a practice of bringing your whole life into the light of God’s presence so He can redeem and heal every area, not just the obvious ones. When we do this, we begin to understand why we respond the way we do and allow God to break the cycles that keep dragging us back into the same struggles. True freedom doesn’t come from trying harder — it comes from letting God do the deeper work.

Inventory is not about fixing yourself or white knuckling through your issues. It’s about opening the door to healing by bringing everything into the light — the good, the broken, the buried, the confusing.

As 1 John 1:9 promises:

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

You’re not walking into judgment — you’re walking into grace. You’re not doing this alone — God is with you, guiding every word, holding every memory, and leading you gently toward freedom. Plus having a trusted friend and guide is important as well in this process.

Even the things you’re afraid to face, He already sees. Even the pain you buried, He’s already been present for.

This is not about being exposed to shame. It’s about being seen in love.

As you begin this process, pray the words of Psalm 139:23–24:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart!Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me,and lead me in the way everlasting.”

This prayer isn't a cry for self-help. It's a surrender.

It says, “God, I want You to do what I cannot. Show me what needs healing, and walk with me as You restore it.”

And when shame tries to whisper, “You’re the only one,” remember the truth from 1 Corinthians 10:13:

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

This is your way out. This is your invitation to deeper healing. And this is where God begins to write something new.

Not with your striving — but with your surrender. Not by your strength — but through His Spirit. Not by hiding — but by being seen, known, and loved anyway.

So take the first step. Bring it all into the light. He’s not afraid of your inventory — He’s ready to redeem it.
