Embracing Our Story - The Story God is Writing With Us

I want to share from the book To Be Told- a abook bout the story of our lives —the experiences and life that God is writing and we are embracing. This beautiful journey to get to know all of our strengths—and warts and know that He knit each of us together is key to understanding how much God loves me.

Dan Allender's approach to embracing your story is deeply rooted in the belief that each person's life story is woven by God, even amid pain, trauma, and brokenness. In to Be Told, Allenders book, he teaches that embracing your story—particularly the painful parts—is essential for personal healing, growth, and spiritual transformation. Here are some key points:

1. Understanding the Role of Suffering

  • We must acknowledge and accept that suffering is a part of their story. Facing these dark moments rather than avoiding or repressing them, we uncover hidden truths and experience a pathway to deeper healing. From the book, suffering is not something to simply "move past" but an invitation to discover meaning, resilience, and redemption.

2. Discovering the Beauty in Brokenness

  • Embracing our storyrequires seeing beauty within brokenness. This means confronting the places where we’ve been hurt and where we’ve hurt others, yet finding value in the lessons, growth, and relational depth that come from this vulnerability. It’s about acknowledging that our imperfections and painful experiences add depth to our life’s tapestry and reveal God’s grace in unexpected ways.

3. Finding Redemption Through Honesty and Vulnerability

  • Honesty as a necessary step for healing. True transformation happens when we’re willing to vulnerably admit our struggles, sins, and hurts. In doing so, we open ourselves to God's redeeming work in our lives. Embracing our story is about letting go of shame and recognizing that God’s love extends even into our darkest places.

4. Owning Your Story for Others’ Sake

  • Embracing your story isn’t only for personal growth—it’s also a way of connecting with and ministering to others. By sharing our stories, we become wounded healers as Henri Nouwen calls us, able to connect with others who may be going through similar struggles. This shared vulnerability fosters compassion and creates community.

5. Rewriting Your Story with God’s Guidance

  • Our life story (again from To Be Told the book) is co-authored by us and God. While we may feel stuck in past roles, traumas, or labels, we’re invited to rewrite these experiences through God’s transformative power. Embracing our story, therefore, means surrendering control, letting God guide the rewriting process, and trusting that He is creating something beautiful out of all parts of our story.

Dan Allender’s perspective on embracing one’s story is fundamentally about faith, grace, and courage. He sees the work of healing as sacred, where each person’s story becomes a testament to God’s power to redeem and bring beauty from ashes. By embracing our story, we’re not only freeing ourselves but also participating in a larger, divine narrative of hope and healing.

Discussion Question:

  1. How does understanding and embracing my own story change the way I interact with others, especially those going through similar struggles?
